Katarina Witt first began to skate when she was five years old. The talent she displayed soon became apparent as she enrolled into a school specifically designed that caters to children who have a passion for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Coach Jutta was also at the school. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982 when she finished 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Following that, she started winning the competition with the grace and elegance she displayed. Olympic success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating in a highly competitive contest. The winner of the competition was a more competitive competition the following year. Actually, she didn't win the free skating contest however, she was awarded gold for her performance during the mandatory figure and short programme. Witt was the first woman to be a repeatedly crowned winner of figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating after her success as a film actor. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she did not get a single medal she was awed by fans even with her seventh place finish. In 1995, Witt got inducted into World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
